Ansley, a graduate of Woodberry Forest, a Virginia boarding school, heard about the film in May 2010 at his 15-year reunion, where producer Perrin Chiles, a former classmate, approached him.

‘Splinters’ – 3 Stars | Director Adam Pesce takes an involving look at the first surf contest in Papua New Guinea. The nation was introduced to the sport in the 1980s, and surfing culture has become a ticket to a new life there, though many have mixed feelings about how it’s changed their lives. Ages-old rivalries crop up in new ways, yet on the waves, where talent and endurance count, wooden surfboards bring cultures together. A cool doc that pivots adroitly between viewpoints and ambitions.

Chronicling the lead-up to a national surfing contest in Papua New Guinea, Adam Pesce’s documentary offers a compelling look at the preparations undertaken by two rival wave-rider clubs in the town of Vanimo. It also doubles as an incisive portrait of a community given to internecine rivalry, petty jealousy and shifting gender politics. While marred somewhat by the griminess of its HD imagery, Splinters nonetheless successfully integrates the sport and an attendant subculture in a way that manages to enhance both, leading to a climactic competition that actually makes you feel something important is at stake.

SPLINTERS is the first feature-length documentary film about the evolution of indigenous surfing in the developing nation of Papua New Guinea. In the 1980s an intrepid Australian pilot left behind a surfboard in the seaside village of Vanimo. Twenty years on, surfing is not only a pillar of village life but also a means to prestige. With no access to economic or educational advancement, let alone running water and power, village life is hermetic. A spot on the Papua New Guinea national surfing team is the way to see the wider world; the only way.
